În permanenta luptă contra piraţilor, Valve anunţă un nou element introdus în Steam şi Steamworks, numit Steam Guard, al cărui rol este creşterea securităţii conturilor utilizatorilor. Astfel, Steam Guard le permite celor care au cont pe Steam să-şi lege managementul contului de un anume PC, iar modificările nu vor fi posibile pe un alt calculator fără acordul proprietarului.
Steam Guard se va folosi de tehnologia Intel Identity Protection Technology (Intel IPT), o tehnologie de encriptare hardware-based ce va veni împreună cu noua generaţie de procesoare Intel CoreT şi Intel CoreT vProT. IPT generează o parolă numerică nouă la fiecare 30 de secunde, fiind integrat în funcţionalitatea procesorului. Utilizatorul va fi de asemenea informat dacă alt PC încearcă să intre în cont şi să facă modificări neautorizate.
